My Work At Home Hobby
Hi! My name is Kathy and I work at home as a private guitar instructor. Some might say I have a dream job- doing what I love and getting paid for it too. My passion for music and the guitar gave me the desire to share what I've learned with others through teaching. It's also why this website was born.
My first guitar was a gift from my parents for my 15th birthday. Other than my first horse, I'd have to say, it's probably the best gift I've ever received. It was so exciting to open the present and find a beautiful classical guitar inside. I could hardly believe it was really mine! It never occurred to me back then that one day I would work at home as a private guitar teacher.
My Guitar Journey Begins Like most teenagers, I was eager to start learning how to play some of my favorite songs right away. So I got out the chord book that came with my guitar and dug in.
I can still remember how weird it was to play my first chord. It felt like my hand was disconnected from my brain! Very strange. Especially since I'm right handed and had to use my left hand to accomplish this feat. But I was determined and after some practice was able to play "Blowin in the Wind" and "Mr. Tamborine Man" by Bob Dylan.
It seems I've alway had an intuitive feel for music, so I picked up new things on the guitar fairly quickly. Many of my friends played the guitar too, so we would often jam and show each other stuff we were learning. It was great fun.
My Work at Home Hobby As the years went by my skills improved and people began asking me If I would teach them how to play the guitar. So I decided to see if I could turn my guitar "hobby" into a work at home business. I took on a few students and soon discovered that I had a knack for teaching. I find it easy to relate to the struggle beginners experience when they're first learning to play the guitar.
But being a self-taught guitarist, I thought it would be helpful to my students if I learned some music theory. So I took a course at the local university and soon discovered that I already knew ninety percent of the material. It was really a nice surprise when I learned I had made the Dean's list!
In 1987 I was invited to join a Christian band called Wings of the Morning and we often performed original music in the area where I live. When Wings of the Morning disbanded, a friend and I formed a new Christian band called Mission. We wrote all our own songs and would play them at various public forums in order to share the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Over the years I was also privileged to perform with the Western Montana Classical Guitar Society. We would occasionally host or take part in a classical guitar "Master Class" to further our education. This was a nice variation to mix in with my folk and rock guitar roots.
So, speaking from personal experience, I can tell you that it is possible to teach yourself how to play the guitar! But your success will depend a great deal on the level of motivation and desire you have to stay the course.
