Hi! My name is Kathy and I work at home as a private guitar instructor and webmaster of AbcLearnGuitar.com. Some might say I have a dream job- doing what I love and getting paid for it too!

My passion for music and the guitar has given me the desire to share what I've learned with others through teaching. That's why I’ve created this website, because I want to help you learn how to play the guitar too!

My first guitar was a gift from my parents for my 15th birthday. Other than my first horse, I'd have to say, it's probably the best gift I've ever received. It never occurred to me back then that one day I would work at home as a private guitar instructor.

Like most teenagers, I was eager to start learning how to play some of my favorite songs right away. So I got out the chord book that came with my guitar and dug in.

I can still remember how weird it was to play my first chord. It felt like my hand was disconnected from my brain! But I was determined to learn and pretty soon I was playng "Blowin’ in the Wind" and "Mr. Tambourine Man" by Bob Dylan.

As my skills improved people began asking me to teach them how to play the guitar. So I decided to take on a few students and soon discovered that I had a knack for teaching.

During this period I also took a course in Music Fundamentals at a local university. It was great to discover that I already knew ninety percent of the material, which made all the tests seem like a piece of cake! I hadn’t been a very good student in high school, so you can imagine my surprise when I learned I had even made the Dean's list!

In 1987 I joined a Christian band called Wings of the Morning. We often performed our own original music in local churches, the county fair and other public places in order to share the gospel of Jesus Christ. Learn more….

Wings of the Morning disbanded in 1989, so a friend and I formed a new Christian band called Mission. We also wrote and performed all our own songs and would play them at coffee houses, art fairs and other various public forums in our area. We even made an album of our original music called “Dancin’ with the Blind” which helped to broaden our evangelistic outreach. You can listen to the songs I wrote for this album below...

I became a performing member of the Western Montana Classical Guitar Society around this time too. We would occasionally host, or take part in, Master Classes to further our classical guitar education. As a result of this association I was given the opportunity to participate in the 25th Anniversary Christopher Parkening Master Class that was held in Bozeman, Montana in 1999.

In 2005 I was contacted through my website by a television producer who asked me if he could use a song I had written called “Take My Hand” in a TV documentary he was putting together about Hurricane Katrina. He also asked if I had any more material that might work with his program. It just so happened that my husband had written a song and we were in the process of recording it at that time. We sent him the words and he loved it. We were thrilled when the producer told us he wanted to use both of our songs! Learn more…
