The G Major Scale

The G Major Scale has one sharp. By following the pattern of whole steps and half-steps needed to make a major scale as explained in the Guitar Scales lesson, you will discover which note is sharp. Lets start building the scale by first writing down the degrees, letters and major scale pattern for G.

EXAMPLE:

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
G A B C D E F G
w w h w w w h

Looking at the example above you can see that we need a whole step between the 6th and 7th degree of the scale (E to F). Remember there is always a half-step between the natural notes B/C and E/F on the guitar fretboard. So what do we do when we need to move a whole step from E? We raise the F natural one more 1/2 step and it becomes F#!
