The D Major Scale
The D Major Scale has 2 sharps. By following the pattern of whole steps and half-steps as explained in the Guitar Scales lesson, you will discover which notes are sharp. Lets start building the scale by first writing down the degrees, letters and major scale pattern for D. EXAMPLE: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 D E F G A B C D w w h w w w hLooking at the example above you can see that we need a whole step between the 2nd and 3rd degree (E to F) and the 6th and 7th degree (B to C). Remember there is always a half-step between the natural notes B/C and E/F on the guitar fretboard. So, a whole step from B puts you on C# and a whole step from E puts you on F#. Presto! You now have 2 sharps! note: Whenever you are moving systematically from one key to tne next, you will always retain the sharps from the previous scale. D MAJOR SCALE = D E F# G A B C# D
